Agreeable, but not captivating。

A slow start but turned into a very enjoyable read。 I hope my retirement will be full as much excitement, camaraderie and day drinking as Elizabeth and her crew!

Absolutely loved it。 Felt like reading a screenplay to a mystery movie I couldnt wait to see who was cast。

Apurva Vurity

Interesting twists in the book midway but definitely not the best twists I read。

Up there with the best books I have ever read!! The characterisation is just amazing, the plot is so detailed yet easy to follow, and I just fell in love with the book! Couldn’t put it down

Starts out as particularly light & funny, even by the standards of the cozy mystery genre。 Gets much darker toward the end, with themes of loss and loneliness among the senior home at the center of the story。 The plot gets fairly convoluted toward the end, and as often happens w/ ensemble casts, not all the characters stand out。 A good series starter & worth watching。 Solid recommend for fans of the less-brutal end of the mystery continuum。

The reason I enjoyed this book was because of the hope it gave me for older years! Insights like - "being able to open a door when you want company, and close a door when you want solitude。。。well isn't that what life is all about?"。 I haven't read many (any?) stories about older people living their best lives。 This was a comforting and easy read that made me smile。 The ending was a little confusing and underwhelming - the murder of Ian seeming entirely unnecessary from what I can understand。 How The reason I enjoyed this book was because of the hope it gave me for older years! What a surprise。。。I literally found this book in my library and liked the cover。。。A combination of Miss Marple and Jessica Fletcher wrapped around a retirement home, that sets the stage for characters and events and an exciting read。 You will find yourself rooting for justice and satisfaction until the bitter end。Osman has created characters that you just know can continue to solve murders as part of their Thursday Murder Club。 The characters also have the support of the local police, so you kno What a surprise。。。I literally found this book in my library and liked the cover。。。A combination of Miss Marple and Jessica Fletcher wrapped around a retirement home, that sets the stage for characters and events and an exciting read。 You will find yourself rooting for justice and satisfaction until the bitter end。Osman has created characters that you just know can continue to solve murders as part of their Thursday Murder Club。 The characters also have the support of the local police, so you know, as far fetched as this might be, there's always protection and help。I look forward to seeing what Mr。 Osman does next。 。。。more

A very nice, kind of soft read。 It is a light crime book if you don't feel like reading something disturbing or too dark。 Characters are quirky and have their own funny personalities。 The story is entertaining and has enough mysteries。 The only characters I didn't like were the cops, Chris and Donna。。。 way too cartoonish, and their dialogue was quite fake for me。 I didn't like every time a chapter focus on them, but the chapters were very short, so the bad parts went by fast。 The ending was kind A very nice, kind of soft read。 It is a light crime book if you don't feel like reading something disturbing or too dark。 Characters are quirky and have their own funny personalities。 The story is entertaining and has enough mysteries。 The only characters I didn't like were the cops, Chris and Donna。。。 way too cartoonish, and their dialogue was quite fake for me。 I didn't like every time a chapter focus on them, but the chapters were very short, so the bad parts went by fast。 The ending was kind of abrupt, I felt there was something missing。 Not sure if I have a bad kindle copy or what。 。。。more

Great to have retirees like me as lead characters using their remaining skills and useful contacts to do a Miss Marple on the official investigators。 Had echoes of Sue Townsend and David Nobbs in the humour。 Laughed out loud at some lines, like the guy who found it difficult to smoke in the sauna。 However, could have done with a list of characters and something about them to refer to as the layout jumped about quite a lot and there were a lot of names to try and hold in mind and connect up。

Took me a while to settle into this book, but once I had I really enjoyed it。

Another book I was sorry to see end。 Four residents of a suburban London retirement village form a club with a misleading name, to discourage interest by others, in which they meet weekly to investigate 'cold case crimes' (one member is an ex cop who illicitly took files with her upon retirement)。 They suddenly find themselves in the midst of actual crime and do more, in their own unorthodox way, to solve it then the police they convince to collaborate with them。 This is a look at aging amidst a Another book I was sorry to see end。 Four residents of a suburban London retirement village form a club with a misleading name, to discourage interest by others, in which they meet weekly to investigate 'cold case crimes' (one member is an ex cop who illicitly took files with her upon retirement)。 They suddenly find themselves in the midst of actual crime and do more, in their own unorthodox way, to solve it then the police they convince to collaborate with them。 This is a look at aging amidst a crime mystery with many intriguing twists and turns。 In the end, I always judge a book by how many emotions it stirred, how hard it was to put down and how anxious I was to pick it up again。 Based on that, I give this book a full 5 stars and look forward to the sequel in Sept 2021。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I’m DNFing this book at 75%, which is a huge bummer。 Basically, I don’t like Elizabeth, who is manipulative and throws her friends under the bus for her own pursuit of justice/glory quite a bit。 I love a cozy mystery but this group has no connection to the murder。 Also a man commits suicide, sort of inspired by their questioning? Basically in this book, the club comes off as really irresponsible and uncaring to me。 But mainly, if you don’t like Elizabeth, then this book kind of falls apart becau I’m DNFing this book at 75%, which is a huge bummer。 Basically, I don’t like Elizabeth, who is manipulative and throws her friends under the bus for her own pursuit of justice/glory quite a bit。 I love a cozy mystery but this group has no connection to the murder。 Also a man commits suicide, sort of inspired by their questioning? I thought this was a bit overrated。 It was a good story and cleverly written but I just did not warm to the style or plot and I did not find it laugh out loud funny。 Sorry wanted to like it more。

Pretty clever! I probably felt more comfortable with 3 1/2 stars but I rounded up。 Four 70-year-olds in a retirement village spend time looking over unsolved crimes, but when a local developer is found dead, the Thursday Murder Club is in the middle of a live case。 The characters exude charm and are very believable。 Shows how the older generation is still able to use their talents and contribute to society。

A hilarious puzzle box of a book - packed with charm, thoughtfully crafted characters, and the kind of story in which a dozen threads become clearly connected by the end。 A fast fizzy read that I thoroughly enjoyed and I'm glad to see this will be a series - more Joyce!!!! Really struggled to read this, instantly forgettable characters and far too many, weak and flimsy plot line。 I found the plot very cumbersome to follow with little or no excitement being built。 I was really disappointed as I read through all of the reviews and it seemed like a really good book, but after picking it up, I managed to get to page 65 before I found myself actively avoiding reading, which certainly isn’t something I want。 Judging by the other reviews I would say form your own opinion Really struggled to read this, instantly forgettable characters and far too many, weak and flimsy plot line。 I found the plot very cumbersome to follow with little or no excitement being built。 I was really disappointed as I read through all of the reviews and it seemed like a really good book, but after picking it up, I managed to get to page 65 before I found myself actively avoiding reading, which certainly isn’t something I want。 Judging by the other reviews I would say form your own opinion, just for me, it was something I just couldn’t get on with。 。。。more

Sweet, enjoyable, not groundbreaking in any way, but it would make a great TV series with Judy Dench as Joyce and Maggie Smith as Elizabeth!

A book I wanted to finish ASAP as it just was a bit of a snooze fest。 I had high hopes as there were lots of recommendations on book selling sites etc but just didn’t feel it。 I can see how it would translate to tv-maybe this is the plan?My only comparison is, when watched by tv, if there’s a really gripping drama like killing eve and you watch it and then need something as a time filler, but mindless and easy going like Hawaii 5-0 etc。。。this is the book equivalent of the latter。

*2。5For me, I struggled to get into this。 The change in perspectives and the comings and goings of different characters confused me for a while。 I had to push through to read it and found that I only really started to enjoy it 80% through。 The style of writing, I think wasn't for me。 Maybe listening to the audiobook with the different characters cast, might be a better way for me to follow。 I enjoyed the plot twists and the constant guessing, but that's about it。 *2。5For me, I struggled to get into this。 The change in perspectives and the comings and goings of different characters confused me for a while。 I had to push through to read it and found that I only really started to enjoy it 80% through。 The style of writing, I think wasn't for me。 Maybe listening to the audiobook with the different characters cast, might be a better way for me to follow。 I enjoyed the plot twists and the constant guessing, but that's about it。 。。。more

I was reading and thinking all the time that it would make an amazing film with Judi Dench as Elizabeth。 The plot is interesting and funny but there are so many perspectives and really quick jumps between characters that I found it hard to enjoy as a cohesive story。 Writing is great and many seem to enjoy the story so might be a preference thing here really。

Madi Purrenhage

Endearing, well developed characters and interesting narrative structure。 The answer to this double/triple murder mystery was NOT obvious and honestly, I felt that there was NO possible way the reader would have figured it out。 Fun concept and well-written! 4 overall。

Honestly I was not sure what to think of this book initially。 It took a wee bit of time to get to know these seniors。 I am glad I stuck it out because as the book went on all the characters became more entertaining and more real。 The ending had a few twists and surprises。 I am going to seek out the next in this series。

Koumal

Warm and witty。
